January 2013: Weaning weights impressive at Isauld

Weaning weights this year have excelled previous years with the bull calves averaging just over 400kgs for March to May born bulls with a top weight of 490kg, while the heifers averaged 350kgs.

El Torros calf crop have really stood out this year. His calves have very average birth weights and have grown on tremendously. Our bull calves are wintering very well this year with huge growth and weight gains. Fed on a TMR, some 53 bull calves have averaged 2.1kg a day since weaning with the top four bulls in the shed achieving 2.6kg a day. The TMR ration comprises of mainly home grown crops of mainly silage oats and straw with 1kg of barley a head a day. They are a really good group of bulls and are available for viewing at any time. In February we have three bulls forward for Stirling and details of these and our young bulls can be found on the for sale page.

May 2012

Calving is now just about over and already we have some very promising young calves by our stock bulls Rawburn El Torro, Netherton Blitzen and Inkstack Farenheit, while our AI-bred calves are by Young Dale Hogan, MVF Stockman, Rito 9M9 and The Moss Florian. We are also incredibly pleased with our ET calves this year which are by Ankonian Elixir, GH Coverboy Eric and CCL Dateline. All sire groups are pleasing at the moment with the El Torro calves calving easily and growing into big thick calves very quickly. Inkstack Farenheit's calves are probably the best he's produced so far. The Blelack heifers sired mainly by Nightingale Defiance and Netherallan Peter Pershore have produced cracking calves and are proving to be excellent mothers with plenty milk. The 2011-born bulls sired by Galawater Lord Randolph, Farenheit, Blitzen and Chapelton Eventer all scanned really well and have turned into a very promising group of young bulls with good size, length, power and flesh. Details of these can be found on the for sale page.

Isauld Black Line K032 leads our Stirling offering

Sale leader for us in Stirling this month was the March 2010-born Isauld Black Line K032, a son of our senior herd sire Netherton Blitzen G445 out of the Fairoaks Evolve S60 daughter and one of the herd’s best breeding females Black Lily 20th of Dalmore. With a TDI of +31 and a SRI of +40, he sold to a and J M Taylor, Blackburn, West Lothian. Next to sell for us was the March 2010-born Isauld Pelude K999, a son of Sandside Prince Charlie F134 out of the Palladium of Ladeside daughter Dalmore Prelectrolass D300. He sold to J Fowlie, Strichen, Aberdeenshire. We’d like to wish both buyers the very best with their new herd sires.

Isauld secure top performance sire Rawburn El Torro

We are delighted to announce the purchase of one of the highest indexed bulls in the breed, Rawburn El Torro in a private sale for an undisclosed five figure sum.

Purchased from the Rawburn herd of Messrs John Elliot, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, El Torro was the highest weight gaining bull in the 2008 calf crop and was used for two years in the Rawburn herd. He is the highest Terminal Index (+59) and Self Replacing Index (+79) proven sire in the UK herd book and is the sire of the highest Terminal Index bull ever recorded in the UK to date, Rawburn Dublin who has a TI of +67 and a SRI of +81. His maternal brother Rawburn Edge sold to the Eastfield herd in 2010 for 20, 000.

El Torro master

Rawburn El Torro

By the renowned high performance Rawburn Transformer, a sire who has more registered offspring than any other bull ever in the UK, he is out of Rawburn Ellen Erica D298, a daughter of the Rawburn owned Canadian embryo donor Cudlobe Ellen Erica 46D and maternal sister of the dam of Rawburn Emblem K127 that sold to Ballathie this year for 30, 000.

El Torro is an incredibly powerful bull with great size and width. He has tremendous shape and muscle for a bull that is so correct. Figures wise, he's one of the top proven sire in the breed for both Terminal and Self Replacing index. His pedigree is also one that will no doubt compliment the breeding programme at Isauld. After seeing his fantastic offspring at Rawburn we were sure this bull would have a great impact at Isauld.

Lord Randolph calves look promising

The first calves from our new stock bull Galawater Lord Randolph are now on the ground and have far exceeded expectations. His calves are long and thick with a lot of bone and are extremely quick and alert at birth.

Calves from our other two bulls Farenheit and Blitzen have also been calving well and look every bit as good as last year leaving some very thick stylish calves.

2010

Dalmore flushing programme

This year we flushed two of our Dalmore cows, Dalmore Black Lily Z005 and her dam Black Lily 25th of Dalmore. They are two of our older cows, but have been consistently breeding some of our highest performing calves.

Black Lily 25th was flushed to Ankonian Elixir giving 13 Grade 1 Embryos in a single flush. Six of them were implanted and we were delighted to get four heifer calves and two bulls as a result. The calves are excellent and should really establish this female line here at Isauld.

Black Lily Z005 was flushed to Lockerley Legolas in an attempt to bring in some different bloodlines to the herd. Unfortunately only one of the five implants held, but the resulting bull calf is showing plenty of length and thickness.

Blelack in-calf heifers calves down well to Peter Pershore and Duke

In-calf heifers purchased from the Blelack herd of Messrs Neil and Graeme Massie have now calved down to Netherallan Peter Pershore and Blelack Duke. These calves are very pleasing as are the calves out of our female purchases from The Moss. They were in-calf to Wedderlie Blackdown, Florist of the Moss and Chaleton Eventer.

The two Eventer calves (bull and a heifer) are real stand outs and it will be interesting to see how they progress.
